Amazon.com In the mountainous high country above the Australian bush, wild horses run free: Australians call them wild "brumbies." Author Elyne Mitchell's book, The Silver Brumby, on which this movie is based, is about a magnificent silver stallion, Thowra. The story opens on a dark and stormy night in the high country. Elyne (Caroline Goodall), spins a tale to comfort her daughter, Indi (Ami Daemion). The beautiful mare, Bell-Bell, gives birth to Thowra, an exceptional cream-colored foal, with a mane and tail that gleam silver in the moonlight. We see Thowra grow up through several seasons. Winter has its hardships; the herds of horses find survival difficult in the snow-packed mountains. But summer may be even more dangerous, for that's when men return to the high country to try to catch the brumbies and cruelly break them of their wildness. For one man (called simply "The Man" in Elyne's story), capturing Thowra, now king of all the brumbies, becomes an obsession. The Man is played by Russell Crowe, whose usual fine acting is enhanced here by impressive horsemanship. The struggle between Thowra and The Man takes on mythic proportions, building to a haunting climax. Gorgeous footage of wild horses running and rearing in the mountains make this the perfect movie for horse-lovers of all ages. We come to care deeply about the fate of these splendid creatures, whose wisdom and passion are rivaled only by their beauty. --Laura Mirsky

A classic, but the horses should be on the DVD cover January 5, 2005 39 out of 43 found this review helpful
As an Outback author (Caroline Goodall) churns out the pages of her tale about a wild Brumby, her horse-crazy daughter Indi (Ami Daemion) eagerly reads each chapter as it comes off the typewriter. With her mother's voice intoning in the little girl's mind, the dramatic story unfolds: One dark and stormy night, a magnificent golden colt with a silver mane and tail is born and leads a life of great adventure. The narrative switches back and forth between the horse's story, and the people's. Very well done.

Two words: See it! It's the best movie yet! I've watched it a total of 11 times, and it NEVER get's boring. With the breath taking scence, and horses this is a MUST movie. You look through the eyes of a horse. ( Which I must say is very wonderful touch to this movie ) It's ending leaves you in question and a smile or a tear or two. But it also leaves you wanting to see it again and AGAIN!
This story of the legend of Thowra never left my memory. October 13, 2002 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I first watched this movie at about the age of seven. I never saw it afterward. The years passed but I always remembered that horse movie about the horse Thowra, but I never recalled the name of the movie. Then, by a twist of fate, as I was viewing a filmography of Russell Crowe, I found the movie I had never forgot. The story is wonderful, as a child and even now, I love it. The beautiful scenery of the wild horses will stay an imprint in your mind forever.Thowra is the majestic silver stallion. The Man, played by Russell Crowe, is obsessed with owning this king of the brumbies. He follows Thowra everywhere searching for and desiring the stallion. Thowra determines never to be caught but what will be the outcome of the steep climax that ends in the production of a legend and dreams. The Silver Stallion is a great movie for all horse lovers and dreamers. Go buy it now!
The Silver Stallion December 22, 2001 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I purchased this video so I would have a good movie for my grandchildren to watch. So far so good. The response from them (ages 10 & 7) is that they sat still through the whole movie and really enjoyed it. This movie is the winner of a 1994 parents choice award. Excellent for young people and it doesn't hurt that Russell Crowe is in it. You get to watch the talented Russell Crowe ride his horse - and it was him - not a double. He is so versatile. Excellent storyline too. This is a must for your video collections.
BEAUTIFUL!!!! December 31, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The silver stallion, Thowra, is breath takingly beautiful, but i don't get why they call him silver when he is a palomino. The countryside is GORGOUS! The acting is ok, but the movie is not really about that, but the horses. All of the scenes are really good except the end scene, and the song that plays with the credits is breath-taking! I loved this movie and it is great for any horse lover or pre-teen! RECOMENDED!!!
